Itinerari a Montecchio

AT A SLOW PACE

Under the sign of trails, between Amerino and Orvietano

Montecchio is a land best discovered on foot. Hills unfurl soft ridgelines, chestnut woods breathe cool shade, gorges hold the freshness of water; between stone and olive trees, white roads, mule tracks, and old transhumance paths take shape.
Here your steps weave into our stories: those of the villages and the routes that link them—perfect on foot, by bike, or on horseback.

Walking the Sentieri Amerini

To catch the spirit of the place, start gently: the three urban loops (Montecchio, Melezzole, Tenaglie) are short circuits through lanes, squares, towers, and fountains.

When the rhythm is right, leave the walls and follow the CAI red-white blazes: the Sentieri Amerini form a lattice that slips from town into woodland and climbs the ridges. Beyond the Melezzole Loop (CAI 710) and Montecchio’s A–B–C routes (707–708–709), you’ll find Posta del Prete – Monte Pianicel Grande (711) and the connector to Monte Pianicel Grande (712); from Cocciano (Le Case) to Grotta Porcina and Piani Puosi runs 713; the ridge Santa Restituta – Melezzole is 744, while Santa Restituta – Montecchio is 745. For longer traverses, the Alta Via dei Monti Amerini (746) crosses our crests, and 747 links Melezzole and Montecchio through forests and viewpoints. Each route page on the site provides maps, GPX, elevation gain, water points, and practical tips.

The great routes—on foot, by bike, on horseback

If you’re dreaming in days rather than hours, the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti starts and finishes in Tenaglie: a ~90 km ring through hilltop hamlets, valleys, beech woods, and vistas brushing the Tiber. Along the way you’ll meet inns, stone houses, and unhurried time. Reaching further, the Italy Coast to Coast intersects here and meshes with the regional bridleway: contour tracks, open meadows, and farm roads made for riders, too.

The fabric is the same—only the breath changes. Gravel bikes love our white roads among olives and vines; MTB rides duck into the woods on light singletrack and flowing dirt. Horseback routes follow historic drove roads and pastures, with water points and stops detailed on each route page. What they share: authentic landscapes, little traffic, deep quiet.
