Visit Montecchio

Umbro-Etruscan frontier land, land of contested castles, land of a landscape shaped by silent hamlets and rolling hills of olive, oak and chestnut trees.

Come slow, stay long

Umbria, between the Tiber and the hills

Montecchio is stone and green horizons: a medieval castle overlooking the Tiber Valley, and two intimate, authentic hamlets — Melezzole and Tenaglie — with roads that wander through hills dotted with oaks, olives and chestnuts.

Here you’ll find the legacy of Saint Bernardine of Siena (the town’s patron); from here starts the Cammino dei Borghi Silenti (a 90-km route across ridges and woods); and here, in the Vallone di San Lorenzo, you can visit an Umbro-Etruscan necropolis, with finds preserved at the AMAT Museum in Tenaglie.

Montecchio is an ideal destination for slow travel — families, hikers and cycle-tourists — just a short distance from Rome.

Upcoming events

Village festivals, traditions and nature: from Montecchio’s Feast of Saint Bernardine to Melezzole’s Chestnut Fair, plus the Bignè Festival and the Wild Boar Festival. Exhibitions, workshops and outdoor outings: discover what’s happening across our squares, lanes and hills.

What awaits you within our walls

History and stories, stone by stone: urban treks and more

Walk inside a castle, following a route in and out of the walls: La Torre, the Punishments Board, Vicolo Brutto, Santa Maria Assunta and Largo San Bernardino, all the way to Porta Nova. Explore the urban routes of Melezzole and Tenaglie as well. Visit the Umbro-Etruscan Necropolis of the Vallone di San Lorenzo, or pause for a meal at a local restaurant or an olive-oil tasting at the mill.

Here the experience is essential and authentic: an invitation to slow down and savour our entire territory.
